About Mario

Mario is a dignified male Barbary macaque monkey, and the leader of his small group. He was most likely born in the wild in North Africa, and incredibly, the first thing we know for sure about him is that he was found as a youngster, in Paris, tied to a lamppost! Along with his group-mates Chico and Donkey, Mario came to live at The Monkey Sanctuary in 2008, when the sanctuary he had been living in was forced to close due to the nationwide 'credit crunch'. All three have grown to adulthood here in Cornwall.

Mario is a skilled leader. He does not seek out conflict with his sometimes-rival Chico, but when Chico goes too far, Mario makes it clear who is in charge. Mario is quite reserved with his human carers, and seems to most enjoy sitting atop a high perch in his territory and surveying the world around him. Perhaps the most excited we have seen Mario was when a stray cow wandered down into the monkey territory one evening – he did a great job alerting everyone to the danger!

Barbary macaques are native to North Africa. Sadly, they are Endangered, in part as a result of the European pet trade. Macaques are regularly captured as infants and smuggled into Europe, where rescue centres are overwhelmed with demand for housing confiscated or surrendered individuals. Return to the wild is currently not an option for the vast majority of these monkeys.

Adopting Mario means that you are helping to provide the resources needed to give Mario the best life possible. Your adoption also enables Wild Futures to continue its vital work campaigning for an end to the primate pet trade in the UK and abroad.
