About Chanel

Name: Chanel

Species: Capuchin (Cebus spp)

Who is she? The Princess of The Weeper Capuchins

Specials skills: Swinging on ropes!

Chanel was forcibly taken from her mother as an infant to be hand-reared and kept as a pet with another monkey named Coco. They were later confiscated after Coco escaped from the dog-kennel they were being kept in. It was found that their owner didn’t have the correct license to keep them, so they both came to live at our Sanctuary in 2003.

On arrival, Chanel was underweight and extremely frightened. She displayed some of the most severe stereotypical behaviours we have ever seen, such as teeth grinding, hand-clapping, and anxiously leaping up and down; a testament to her old life as a pet. Chanel has since greatly improved both physically and psychologically, and she now flourishes with the specialist care that she receives. Her friend, Coco, has since passed away, but she lives happily in our very social weeper capuchin group. Always a fan of comfort, her carers find that she is usually the first to bed in the evenings - always with one of her favourite fleecy blankets in tow!

Chanel can often be a timid character, mostly owing to her previous trauma. Around those she trusts, she is a wonderful and fun personality. We are incredibly proud of the journey Chanel continues to be on - she is a shining example of how resilient and strong monkeys are.

Primates are intelligent and sociable animals and being kept as pets is a lonely, under-stimulating existence that can lead to abnormal behaviours. These behaviours may remain with the monkeys for the rest of their lives, but with enough environmental stimulation, social company, and lots of territory space with access to branches and trees, we can help these monkeys recover and offer them a stable, stimulating, and social life at the Sanctuary.

Adopting Chanel means that you are helping to provide the resources needed to give Chanel the best life possible. Your adoption also enables Wild Futures to continue its vital work campaigning for an end to the primate pet trade in the UK and abroad.

Our adoptions are purely symbolic, which means you will not receive any real animals in the post! Monkeys are wild animals – not domesticated pets.

By purchasing a symbolic monkey adoption, you are agreeing to our Terms and Conditions.
