About Mr Monkey

Mr Monkey is a hybrid-breed capuchin monkey rescued by the Monkey Sanctuary when his owners emigrated to Portugal and were unable to take him with them, as Portugal, unlike the UK, has outlawed the keeping of primates as pets.

Mr Monkey is very intelligent and has some unusual stereotypical behaviours after living an under-stimulated life as a pet. If he feels nervous or anxious in any way, then he will often 'self-grasp' , an action that looks somewhat like he is hugging himself. Mr Monkey also over-grooms if he has a difficult day, often pulling out whole sections of hair on his toes. Although he is still troubled by these stereotypical behaviours, he leads an active social life at the Monkey Sanctuary and has improved in so many ways since his arrival! He is a resilient character who is determined to overcome his past. He has made several good friends and looks to them for reassurance and fun!

Primates are intelligent and sociable animals and being kept as pets is a lonely, under-stimulating existence that can lead to abnormal behaviours, such as those Mr Monkey presents. These behaviours may remain with the monkeys for the rest of their lives, but with environmental stimulation, social company, and lots of territory space with access to branches and trees, we can help these monkeys recover and offer them a stable, stimulating, and social life at the Sanctuary.

Adopting Mr Monkey means that you are helping to provide the resources needed to give Mr Monkey the best life possible. Your adoption also enables Wild Futures to continue its vital work campaigning for an end to the primate pet trade in the UK and abroad.

PLEASE NOTE: Our adoptions are purely symbolic and are a great way to support our sanctuary, where the monkeys shown on our website (who have been rescued from traumatic lives as peoples pets) have a home for life.
